Light Dawns in the Darkness

Do you need some good news today? It seems everywhere we turn there is unrest and injustice in our world. With new medical findings and COVID-19 statistics that bring along fear and controversy, announcements of yet another less-than-peaceful protest, and an ever-increasing hostile political climate, it’s no wonder our nation is in a constant state of dissension. 

Instead of letting breaking news headlines or the latest mandate set the pace for your day, would you join me in turning to the Word of God to settle our hearts and minds?

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
he will be remembered forever.
He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. 

-Psalm 112:4-7 (ESV)

The world is dark, but God is the Everlasting Light. We don’t have to be afraid of bad news! He has defeated sin and death once and for all. Are we too quick to forget that Gospel truth? Living in light of eternity doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to events at home and in our world, but it does mean keeping a right perspective. 

God calls us to a life of grace, mercy, justice, and generosity, all while trusting in him wholeheartedly. He promises to hold us securely and remember us forever (Psalm 112: 6). The benefit of living this way is twofold: a firm foundation for our lives now on earth and the future promise of eternity with him in heaven. God doesn’t guarantee our lives will be without trouble or turmoil but that he is the Light that outshines all of the darkness. He promises to be our comfort, strength, and guide; we cannot be moved if we are in Christ. 

So while policies will change, riots will occur, injustice will continue--God will still reign. His kingdom cannot be shaken and he holds us fast through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:28). And our response? To be the light as he is the Light. To love God and love others, humble ourselves, serve one another, protect and advocate, bring peace. Amen.
