The American Psychiatric Nurses Association reminds us that “whole health begins with mental health” (https://www.apna.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/APNASelfCareTipSheet.pdf)
Assess yourself (and maybe a nurse colleague who seems needful of self-care). In addition to reading/listening to God’s Word, worship, prayer, and time with other believers, which of these will you put into practice this week for better care of yourself?
- Take up a hobby.
- Unplug from electronic devices.
- Use self-talk (Preach God’s truth to yourself!)
- Don’t be afraid to say “no”….
- …But say “yes” to friends, family and coworkers you care about.
- Focus on nutrition (food is fuel).
- Get moving.
- Go outside.
- Try meditation (check out breath prayers: https://www.instagram.com/ncfstudentministry/)
- Care for yourself at work (take breaks; eat).
- Get a massage.
- Prioritize sleep.
- Listen to music.
- Hug someone.
- Embrace your spirituality.
A Prayer for Self-care
Dear Lord, help me. Show me how to care for myself so that I can be strengthened to care for others. Forgive me for the times I have neglected my time with you. Give me wisdom to balance my life according to your will. Where I am weak, please make me strong. Where I am hurting, please heal me. When I am fearful, please release the fear. I pray for sound mind, purity of heart, and peace. I pray you teach me how to rest when my mind races. Show me how to live a balanced life and remove all distractions that come my way. I only want to walk through the doors you open, Lord. Thank you for forgiving me and loving me just as I am. Amen
Prayer written by Kathy McKinnon, MSN,BSN, chaplain and nursing professor.
