Mission Statement
The Mark and Huldah Buntain College of Nursing at Northwest University prepares graduates to answer their call to serve God throughout the world and lead others by using their professional expertise as nurses.

- Our faith-based perspective is reflected in our mission statement, course objectives, program outcomes, faculty, and our trad program’s pre-requisites.
- Faith is integrated in our coursework including, but not limited to, our Faith Integration course.
- Students have mid-day chapel services on campus as well as evening worship services, small groups, and other forms of discipleship ongoing.
- With a strong emphasis on cultural sensitivity our students study cultural anthropology, global and intercultural healthcare, and practice person-centered patient care from a holistic perspective as they pursue their calling to the nursing profession.
- In the course NURS 4963 “Nursing Practice as Ministry” our students experience a 3-week immersion in a cross-cultural site that includes clinicals, and ministry.
- Students are exposed to other healthcare systems and leadership through many clinical hours over a 3-week span.
- They live within a culture different than their own to experience new foods, languages, transportation and history, etc.
- Our hosts at each site are connected to a local church ministry which allows students to participate in church services, teaching opportunities, music ministry, feeding programs, youth outreaches, and more.
- Some of the places our students have visited for this course include:
- Kenya, Republic of Georgia, Zambia, Mexico, Belize, The Philippines, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, India, West Africa on the Mercy Ship, Zimbabwe, and others.
- Our state-of-the-art technology includes high - and low - fidelity manikins in our two simulation labs, and a testing system with Examsoft® that utilizes the Exemplify app on students’ computers.
- Our BSN students have a research class wherein students learn the process and importance of evidence-based research and a strategic planning class that pulls students into the realm of leadership in healthcare and policy reform.
- There are service-learning opportunities in our BSN clinicals with “Population Health Nursing in the Community” (Community Health) pertaining to working with marginalized populations.
Mission/Service-Learning Opportunities
- Our students have opportunities to do community outreach in all 4 years here at NU, partnering with our Campus Ministries department.
- As freshman and sophomores, they are provided domestic and local, short-term missions, and other ways to serve.
