When Comic Books Count

I’m a retired pediatric nurse who truly believes that Jesus works through nurses! During my career, I had several experiences that I could share; one comes to mind that I will never forget.

I was taking care of a 10-year-old girl with cancer and she was dying. She told me how a man in a brown robe came to sit with her in the corner of her room every night. One day, I asked her if I could get her anything--she told me she wanted a blueberry doughnut and Archie comic books.

The first was easy, but I didn’t know where to find comic books. I went to the hospital cafeteria, bought a doughnut, and gave it to her, explaining that I didn’t know how I was going to get the Archie comic books.

I told her I would look in the playroom. In the playroom, I started going through the shelves of toys and books, when I noticed a brown sack. It looked like an unmarked grocery bag. I looked inside the half-full sack—and found Archie comic books! No one knew where they came from, but a dying little girl was happy.

I still get tears in my eyes today thinking about this story and how God does work through nurses.
