Being a Christian nurse means God has given you a heart to care for others which is what compelled you to go into nursing. You bring this heart into the stories of so much suffering, grief, loss. Much is asked of you—mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. This ministry of caring for the hurting is holy work.
Yet at times, it can feel difficult to see where God is in the midst of all the chaos and darkness. There are stories we can’t make sense of and complicated situations where there are no easy answers. Spiritual platitudes don’t touch the depth of what we sometimes wrestle with.
Reading and meditating on God’s Word is our antidote for the questions, hardships, losses, and just plain hard work of nursing. And devotional readings that connect our nursing stories and questions to God’s Word can be so heartening and fortifying.
For example, on the NCF website, pediatric ICU nurse Huiwen Sato has shared some gritty, authentic devotionals, Reflections for Nurses in the Trenches, specifically for nurses like us:
- for we who hunger and thirst for righteousness to make and guide our work, not apathy of cynicism.
- for those of us who mourn for our patients and seek to be comforted
- for us nurses who long to be pure in the hearts we bring to patients and colleagues, that we might see where God is at work in and through us.
Gather encouragement, strength for your spirit, and hope: Use these and the other free devotionals on the NCF website. We’d love your feedback ncfmailbox@intervarsity.org
