New Hands

“You’re finally here!” I hadn’t seen Gedeon and Eva for several years, but they had been on my heart for quite some time. Several years ago, one of our teammates here in Bolivia had attended a medical conference and received several prosthetic hands donated by the Helping Hands Program. I’ve had these hands sitting on a shelf in the clinic just waiting for Gedeon and Eva. This couple had been in a dynamite accident that took both of Gedeon’s hands and one of Eva’s. This sweet couple were perfect recipients of the prosthetics, but I had no way of contacting them.

I was overjoyed when they walked into clinic and I could finally tell them about the prosthetics. They were beyond excited. Gedeon had tried a prosthetic once before, but it had been far too heavy for him to be able to maneuver. These new prosthetics are extremely lightweight and much easier for Eva to place on both of them with her remaining hand.

We fitted Eva first and she started beaming as she practiced picking up her market bag and holding her purse. After fitting Gedeon with his prosthetic, he immediately began to try and write. He was practically bouncing with anticipation of finally being able to write his name again and hold a utensil.

We were able to share the Gospel with Gedeon and Eva and prayed with them before they left. They returned several weeks later for a follow-up, and like children wanting to show someone their new toy or something new that they have learned, they excitedly began to show me all they were now able to do with their new hands.

I couldn’t help but think of the amazing privilege it is as believers and nurses to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others. Psalm 68 speaks of God’s awesomeness and power. Verses 5-6 shift to his deeply personal care and concern for those who are hurting. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s care for those in need. As God’s redeemed image-bearers, we have his call to care for others as well. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are able to be the hands and feet of Jesus to care for those in need and tell them of our incredible God who so deeply loves them.

O God, you are awesome from your sanctuary

The God of Israel himself gives strength and power to the people.

Blessed be God! (Psalm 68:35)
