Devotional: God Sees Me

Christy Secor reflects here on God’s name, El Roi, which means the God who sees me.

The God Who Sees Me

In Genesis 16:13, we find the first time the name El Roi is used for God. It means “the God who sees me.” This name was spoken by Hagar, a slave to Sarah. Sarah had given Hagar to Abraham, her husband, to produce an heir. Hagar had no say in any of this. Later, when Sarah began to mistreat Hagar, the slave ran away to the desert where an angel of the Lord found her and encouraged her. Hagar responded with “You are the God who sees me.”

Prayer:

God, in all we face today; you are there.

You are the God who sees each of us.

You are the God who sees me. Amen.

God Values Me

In Luke 12: 6-7, God reminds us of our worth and our value. We remember our identity is found in him.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Prayer:

As I begin my shift today,

I thank you for seeing me…

for knowing me down to the hairs on my head.

Remind me today of my worth and value in your eyes. Amen.

God is My Strength

David wrote in Psalm 121 some encouragement we all need:

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber.

We know nothing will happen today that will take God by surprise. He doesn’t sleep. The God who made heaven and earth is the God who created me. He’s there to be our support, our encouragement, and present with us in all we face.

Prayer:

You’re my source of strength, God.

You are my help. You do not grow weary. You do not sleep.

You watch over me. I remember your presence in my life today.

I remember to look to you with whatever I face today.

I remember to trust in you. Amen.
