Kathy Schoonover-Shoffner, PhD, RN, National Director of Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF), understands the unique struggles that nurses face daily. Recently, Kathy Schoonover-Shoffner was interviewed on NCF's Following Jesus in Nursing podcast where she shared insights on how regularly taking in God’s Word can empower nurses to discern opportunities, share the Gospel with patients, and face daily challenges with hope.
Nursing is more than a profession; it's a calling that demands healthcare expertise plus emotional and spiritual resilience. Kathy emphasizes the importance of nurturing the spiritual aspect of nursing, stating that staying connected with the Word is pivotal in achieving this balance.
"When nurses engage with the Word regularly, they develop a discerning spirit," says Kathy. She believes that immersing oneself in Scripture allows a nurse to cultivate a keen awareness of opportunities to impact patients' lives positively. During the chaos of the hospital or clinic, being attuned to these opportunities can transform routine care into moments of deep connection and compassion.
Nurses, by nature of their profession, are well positioned to comfort and support patients in their times of vulnerability. By integrating the Bible’s teachings into their interactions, nurses can offer more than just healthcare; they can share hope and reassurance rooted in faith.
Facing daily challenges with hope is a fundamental aspect of nursing that can be nurtured through spiritual practices (Bible reading, prayer, meditation, worship, etc.). Kathy encourages nurses to delve into the Bible for inspiration and strength when facing inevitable trials. Whether grappling with patients’ difficult diagnoses, navigating complex ethical dilemmas, or coping with the emotional toll of patient care, God’s Word is a steadfast anchor.
As the demands on nurses continue, prioritizing spiritual well-being alongside professional development is essential for nurses to survive and thrive in their calling.
