The Power of Lament

I don’t remember when COVID-19 began anymore. It feels like months, but I know it’s only been a matter of weeks. The rate of change has been intense. More than day to day or week from week…at times it’s been moment to moment. 

There has been so much loss. And at the same time, so many opportunities have been created for the world to hear and know the heart of God. It’s been a time of deep reflection. It’s been a time of grief and lament. It’s also been a time where I’ve been reminded of God’s character and His presence with me…with each of us. 

Lamentations 3:19-24 (NIV) says:

"I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.

I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.

Yet this I call to mind and therefore, I have hope:

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him.”

The book by Mark Vroegop called Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy has been helpful to me during this process. It’s taught me the power of lament and how to lament from a biblical perspective. It’s reminded me that I can bring my complaints, grief, anger, and loss to God. It’s taught me the purpose of lament is to bring me through my pain to a place of deeper trust in God. Keywords like “but” or “yet” in the scripture serve as reminders that God’s character is true. He is sovereign. I can trust Him. I can rest in Him. I can breathe.

May you each be encouraged wherever you are. Know that you are not alone. His love and presence are with each of us.

NCFI World Congress Delayed to 2021

Due to the worldwide outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the NCFI World Congress 2020 has been officially postponed until July, 2021. The new tentative dates are July 12-16. This decision was made after sincere prayer for God’s wisdom, thoughtful discussion with Colorado Christian University and NCFI leadership, and careful analysis of information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). It is the consensus of all involved parties that this is the wisest decision to make at this time. Watch the NCFI website for details on Congress 2021, as they will be available soon.

Meet the Huntsville, Alabama NCF Group

  • Location: Huntsville, Alabama, about one hour south of Nashville. 
  • Facebook Group: Christian Nurses Huntsville
  • How did you attract members: Initially we reached out to nurses we knew, and asked everyone to invite other Christian nurses to join our Facebook group. Our Facebook group has 44 nurses who are invited regularly to our monthly meetings through the "Events" option.
  • Meetings: Our meetings consisted of monthly Bible study during the first year. Occasionally, our group of 2-10 nurses would go out to dinner. We discuss current nursing issues within our city, pray for each other's personal requests, and fellowship together. As we have spent time together the last year, we have deepened our friendships and learned to lean on one another. 

This year, we have decided to work on goody bags we are taking to the different nursing units to get the word out about who we are in our community. We desire to live out our faith in nursing, and also bring a strong presence of professionalism to the nursing environment in our city. 

The biggest challenge we face is having nurses who are able to devote time to come consistently to our group meetings. We noticed dinners out together draw the largest group. We are planning to do that once per quarter this year. 

We are excited that we are now in our second year in Huntsville. The longer we are around the more word will get out. Our belief is that every nurse needs encouragement and the ability to talk to other like-minded nurses is important. Our group may go through cycles, but if we are faithful and continue, we will always be available when a nurse needs us. We want every nurse in Huntsville to feel he or she has a safe place to rest with nurse friends that can be trusted to care and care for the needs that are shared.
