"We Get To"

These three words changed my heart, attitude, and parenting forever. As a young mom, I was stuck. I was stuck in an endless cycle of dirty diapers and feedings. A friend on social media in the same stage of life posted those three words. I get to. I get to care for my baby; I get to wake up each day and see their face. It changed my parenting. I can get in the same rut in ministry. I have to do this; I have to do that; I have to schedule a meeting with this person; I have to update my spreadsheets. But the same revelation is true. I get to do these things. I get to partner with God in what he does in students' lives and on campus.

As the second semester starts, you may be feeling the have to slump. Ministry can be challenging, you may be prepping a Bible study, and only three people show up. How could this simple mindset change your attitude? We get to partner with the God of the universe to see students' hearts and lives transformed. You may never know the impact your ministry has on the three students who do show up for Bible study. You could change the trajectory of their lives forever. We get to do that! This month’s Campus Vitals is focused on Discipleship. Discipleship may seem like one more have to, but I encourage you to pray, asking God to show you how it can be a get to!

What is Discipleship in NCF?

Discipleship is letting Jesus rewrite your story and bringing others to Jesus for him to re-write their story! In nursing school, Jesus is forming you into his likeness. The cool thing is that He will also use you to develop His likeness in others. We find this idea of discipleship in the Bible. Matthew 28:19-20 says: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” As followers of Jesus, we are to bring others to Jesus and converse about how Jesus wants to be a part of their story!

We want to grow in Christ, like Christ, and with Christ during our time as nursing students.

  • In Christ, we grow in rhythms that change us from the inside out.

  • Like Christ, we give every aspect of our lives to Jesus and let him direct our actions.

  • With Christ, we join him on a mission to the people around us.

Another way of looking at In, Like, and With Christ is to see our identity as a Jesus follower. When we see our primary identity as a follower of Jesus, we make space for Jesus to change us In, Like, and With him.

Discipleship How To’s

We often think, “I can’t disciple someone; I don’t have it all together.” The crazy thing is that Jesus still invites us to walk with others. Jesus works in and through us as we simply make space for others to meet Jesus. So who can you disciple this semester? If no one comes to mind, ask Jesus to make it clear.

  • You can use the NEW NCF Discipleship Guide. Use the guide to meet one-on-one or in a group. You can even use the guide for your NCF meetings.

  • If you invite a few younger students, schedule it before or after your NCF meeting. Meeting just 30 minutes before or after an already scheduled meeting is a great way to find a time that works for everyone.

  • Spend time in prayer before the meeting for the person you are discipling and the discussion itself.

  • Read over the material and think of examples to share from your own life.

  • Send a text to remind everyone of your meeting.

At your first meeting, spend time getting to know one another better. Remember to share openly and vulnerably yourself to encourage those you are meeting with to do the same. Ask questions like: “How has your college and nursing school experience affected your faith journey?”
