The two suicide bombings that killed more than 70 people in Kampala, Uganda, during the World Cup finals on Sunday have created great concern for our NCF Uganda Global Project. Our team is still planning to depart as scheduled on Wednesday July 14. "We are praying urgently for our students and staff who are traveling this week and for our ministry partners in Uganda," said Jane Hall, NCF Director. Leading the team are Connie Jarlsberg and Renee Lick, NCF staff.
When Grace Tazelaar, NCF Missions Director, heard about the bombings, she was on the phone right away with our hosts in Uganda. "We were assured it was safe for us to continue with our trip plans. Our team will be met at Entebbe airport and transported to the guest house which is in a secure and safe location in Kampala."
In a letter of reassurance to the Global Project team, Grace reminded them about the temporal nature of life. "While the bombings are disturbing and we mourn the loss of the lives in Uganda, the reality is that life -- both in the United States and in Uganda -- is in God's hands," Grace said. "Both Connie (Jarlsburg) and I have lived in Africa during civil strife. Renee (Lick) has lived in a part of Chicago that has experienced gang warfare. Wherever we serve God, we commit our lives to Him and His care."
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings" (1 Peter 5:8-9).
