Q: Should President Obama's Affordable HealthCare Act of 2010 be repealed by the U.S. Congress?
That's a hard question to answer. Almost 1500 readers have taken part in an online Quick Poll at journalofchristiannursing.com and the votes are split 50/50! Half of the respondents say "yes," repeal the act, and half say "no" – keep this legislation. A search on the internet reveals an equal 50/50 split for and against the Act in discussions, newspaper articles, blogs, etc. Americans obviously are conflicted!
Perhaps a more important question for Christians is, "What is our responsibility for healthcare in 2011?" For example, God emphasized care of the poor repeatedly throughout Scripture (see Exodus 23:11, Leviticus 25:35-37, 1 Samuel 2:7-8, Proverbs 19:17, and Luke 14:12-14 for just a few examples). How might we help the poor who have limited or no access to healthcare? Jesus said the way we care for "the least of these," including the sick, is how we care for him (Matthew 25).
Another example of our responsibilities as Christian nurses includes, "How are we caring for ourselves?" "Am I taking care of my body?"
